Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
