Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
